Addressing Mental Health and Wellbeing as a Workplace Leader

Leaders play a critical role in creating the right conditions to support mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Boy howdy, am I ever not a fan of individualist approaches to social or organisational problems, particularly vis-à-vis mental health and wellbeing concerns at work. (See, previously: What We’re Reading: Workers’ mental health vulnerable to bad management and How to Meaningfully Address Stress in Your Organisation for more detailed ranting analysis.) What, then, should leaders do for a systemic approach?

Leaders play a critical role in creating the right conditions to support mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. They should have a focus on developing and maintaining a work culture that minimises psychosocial safety risks and enables good mental health and wellbeing outcomes. There are two arms to this:

  • Implement organisational interventions that enable positive psychosocial outcomes
  • Support individuals’ mental health and wellbeing needs

We run a Mental Health and Wellbeing course for leaders that focuses on the following:

  • Mental health and wellbeing in a workplace context: responsibilities and psychosocial risks
  • Organisational lens vs individualist lens
  • Creating and maintaining a supportive, resilient, and preventative culture
  • Supporting individuals: recognising signs, outside help, accommodations, recovery and return to work, effective conversations
  • Looking after your own health and wellbeing
