What I think:

Adaptation to Life by George Vaillant was recommended to me by a friend and it’s one of those books I keep coming back to. In it, Vaillant explores the question of what makes some people happy with their lives and it gets right into the weeds of our “defense mechanisms” from super mature to juvenile and everything in between. Defense mechanisms are ways of coping with challenges – from complete and utter denial (guilty!) to healthy redirecting of an initial instinctive response. There are lots of insights in this article on Vaillant’s work about yourself and others around you.
