Sustainability in heavy industry can feel abstract – especially when you’re working to keep the lights on. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, it can be a source of pride and innovation for operational teams.
Take, for example, one of our clients in Newcastle. They introduced a simple water recycling system in their wheel lathe bay, reducing usage by 40%. What made it stick? It wasn’t a top-down initiative. The idea came from a fitter who noticed how much clean water was literally going down the drain. The team tracked the savings, celebrated the results, and then looked for the next idea.
Relevance is key. Sustainability has to connect to what the team values: safety, efficiency, community. One freight depot in Victoria linked its energy-reduction program directly to safety improvements. Upgrading lighting to LED not only cut power bills but reduced glare and improved visibility in loading zones.
Recognition matters too. At one of our clients, sustainability “wins” are part of the weekly meeting agenda – just like safety metrics. That normalisation sends a clear message: this isn’t fluff, it’s part of how we operate.
When teams can see the impact, and when they’re trusted to lead the change, sustainability becomes more than a policy. It becomes how we do things around here.
